The course will introduce the most important works of literature from the period of 20th and 21st century, both in British and American literature. The students will read and study the texts of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, discussing the structure of modernist prose; T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and e.e. cummings as examples of modernist poetry; postmodernist writers from various anglophone contexts (Lodge, Spark, Fowles, Nabokov, Carter) and contemporary works (McEwan, Barnes, Banville, etc.). Concepts such as modernism, postmodernism, metafiction, historiographic metaficiton, etc. will be defined and expalined through examples.
